All the photos below were taken within walking distance from my home.
Fulton Street between New York Avenue and Brooklyn Avenue
The very first place in New York City to have the massive Black Lives Matter (BLM) mural painted in yellow was in Brooklyn. The exact location is on Fulton Street between New York Avenue and Brooklyn Avenue, right in my neighborhood in the border of Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights. Surprisingly, it wasn’t in Harlem, Manhattan.
However, it makes sense because Black people’s spirits still exist in this area in Brooklyn while the center of Harlem has lost most of it by now. This exact location is really the borderline of gentrified and not-yet-gentrified.
This yellow BLM mural was the second one to be painted in the nation after the initial one was painted in Washington D.C.
BLM Signs at Grand Army Plaza
Grand Army Plaza area has long had the diverse mix of white and Black people.
BLM signs on residential buildings
This sign was place by a long-term Black resident. The most genius and logical design of BLM sign in my neighborhood, right in the area where it has been gentrified almost completely very recently.
Some signs are placed “because it’s cool,” “because I’m scared of George Floyd rally,” “because I don’t want people to vandalize my property,” “because if I don’t show, then they will think I’m against it,” or “just because.” Who knows? In any case, it’s a solidarity.
