The Smallest Practical Ca$h Wallet Ever Made

Wallets should not be one-size-fits-all

I started making clothes because I couldn’t find anything I liked in stores that actually fit my body. Similarly, I started making wallets because I couldn’t find a wallet that perfectly fits US dollar bills.

There are many banknote sizes in this world. Even so, the majority of wallets are one-size-fits-all. If you use one of those wallets for your US dollars, you might have noticed that those wallets have too much give and have extra space around your money. Those wallets take up space in your bag. And never mind that they are impossible to fit into a mini bag.

Custom-fitted wallet for US dollar bills

Conveniently, all US dollar bills are printed in the same size. And they are a lot smaller than the Japanese yen I was used to seeing in my childhood in Japan. When making wallets, there was no way that I could ignore the fact that all US dollar bills have an identical petite size. So, I came up with a wallet that fits US dollars perfectly without leaving excessive space.

Men’s wallet for women

I always wondered, why are there so many cool simple small wallets for men, but not really for women? And even for those men’s wallets, why don’t they have a practical change pocket that’s big enough? And why are the majority of leather wallets so heavy? I didn’t need so many card slots, heavy zippers, or a fancy zipper pull. Therefore, I designed a wallet that not only fit US dollar bills perfectly but also eliminated all unnecessary elements.

Cash and cards should be carried separately

To make the wallet even smaller, I got rid of card slots completely. This was so it could fit a small bag, but it’s also for a security reason. They say, “Cash and cards should be carried separately.” It’s similar to the theory of not carrying a passport and a green card together. It’s because in a worst case scenario, if you ever lose one of them, you should still have the other one. So, let’s just separate cards and cash.

This small cash wallet fits in most mini bags

Mini bags are so cute. They are the ones you go to dinner with and party with. You don’t want to carry a big day-time bag to a special evening occasion or on a weekend shopping and strolling.

Plus, the Smallest Minimalist Wallet does not take up a lot of space in your mini bag. You can still fit a lip stain, keys, and a card case. I usually take out three things from my card case—a Metrocard, one credit card, and an ID—and place them in the inner pocket of a mini bag and leave the card case home.

You don’t need to carry a whole bunch of stuff. Don’t carry your baggage!

Cash only businesses still exist

Technology has brought us cashless businesses. There are card-only shops seen at some places in Manhattan and other places in NYC. However, Cash Only stores also still exist. Many small businesses who are fighting against gentrification and big businesses have been the victims of gentrification still have a cash-only policy or have a minimum charge for credit card use. In order to support those small disenfranchised businesses in your neighborhood, which we all must do, it’s necessary to carry cash with you when you are in your neighborhood.

It’s not a good idea to keep an open tab at a bar

Cash is also necessary when you go have a drink. You may forget to pick up your credit card from the bar before you go home. Also, it’s better to pay for the drink when you order while the waiter/bartender has their attention on you. You never know if the waiter/bartender will get busier by the time you want to leave. When you are ready to go home, you don’t want to have to wait in order to close your tab before you can actually leave the bar. Even without opening a tab at a bar, you can still pay for your drink with your card, but it can be done with cash a lot faster without having them swipe your card.

Tips should be paid with cash

And wherever you go, tips are always appreciated in cash because it’s a visible form of appreciation. Whether it’s for a cab driver, a waiter, or a beautician, tips should be paid meaningfully, not obligatorily included with your credit card payment. These are just some of the reasons why it’s still necessary to carry cash when you are in the US.
